label boss nachtbraker is finally making his solo debut on quartet series after a successful ep last year on heist recordings. widely known for exploring different sounds and angles with his productions, this record is the most club-orientated to date. intricate ghetto house with a slight french touch to straight up 4x4 with a pinch of jacking flavour would be an accurate description of this release. the use of 90s hip hop samples within this auditory concoction successfully highlights nachtbrakers excellent ear for detail and penchant for exciting, eclectic and downright weird changeovers. the main hitter taking over the full a side is the title track small towel people. an uplifting bass line accompanied by heated 909 percussion and a hypnotic thriving arp to seal the deal. on the flipside, youll find kippendijen on the b1. a heavyweight in the house category, some glimpses of early days jacking house and a little french touch on the filter. throw in a breakdown even houdini wouldnt be able to handle and youll find yourself putting this track on repeat. then when the needle hits the b2 groove, zomaar kicks off with an energetic mpc style breakbeat before morphing into a deep jam of lush chords and a thrusting 4x4 beat. the track closes after switching back to the first part of the record and ends in a sublimely deep and dubby breakbeat.

sunstrumental is a double single of two neck breakin, raw, dirty, mpc cuts. it s a nod to the boom-bap school but at the same time also breaks that dogma with fresh current details. instrumentals that many mcs would love to jump on but it s even better they didnt. sunstrumental is the first solo vinyl release by sunnysun, but expect this to be just the beginning of what is to yet to come. sunny is an all-round player: established as an mc (croatian freestyle vice-champion), he lately shifted his focus more on studio work and djing. he created the first mixtape of exclusively slovenian rap music selotejp, his beats underline the lyrics of numerous mcs and appear on compilations like stiropor, ctrl n and btf x rx:tx. all in all, an unorthodox whiz never afraid of gazing into different directions, never limiting himself to just one side of hip hop. truly one of the key players, linking the various clans, posses, crews and cliks. these are his beats.

after the world applauded sascha funke for his latest album lotos land, he gave away some tunes to friends for remix duties. düsseldorf based tolouse low trax formed twirl into a foggy dark mpc-seducer for romantic nighthawks that love dancing. also australian boy dreems prepared a remix that grooves odd and uncommon. his percussive version of im feiern und feuer is a slow whirlwind, perfect to start and end a great dj night. with tuff city kids a duo formed a remix that is good for big room love affairs. their version of purple hill is a heartfelt melange between trance and house deepness that works on any dance floor. the final edit comes from glasgows junto club, who transformed comola, a tune that they already produced originally with sascha funke, into a longing dark melodic synth stepper. four versions, four hits, four atmospheric dimensions beyond words. tune it loud!

after a lengthy hiatus, tuskegee music is back with a heavyweight release indeed: it features tracks written by detroit heavyweights seth troxler—under his young seth alias— and cult fxhe boss omar s. amazingly they were written 11 years ago and have been long forgotten until recently being unearthed. the first track here was inspired by a trip seth made to berlin’s club der visionaere in 2005. “it basically was me returning to detroit and telling omar about this crazy music i heard ricardo play during the day.” the result, ‘deep’(cdv 2006 mix), is a spine tingling atmospheric deep house track. the drums are lo-fi and loose, the bassline is a meandering thing that really sucks you in and soft, gentle toms tumble around the groove and encourage you to cut loose. then comes the experimental slow motion drum shuffle of ‘detroit after midnight’ which the pair made after “finding loads of weird records in his basement sampling them and making a classic mpc detroit cut.” it has the sounds of people talking as if coming from the room next door laid over a lazy and undulating bassline, and is brilliantly weird and sketchy. last of all, young seth goes solo on ‘luiza’s inferno’ five minutes of him jamming on omar’s ms20 with a warbling synth line coated in warm tape hiss and layers of dust. it’s a beatless piece that shows how inventive and ahead of his time troxler was even as a young man. this is a brilliantly unusual ep and another winner for seth troxler and the martinez brothers’ tuskegee label.

chicago’s carington pierre, also known as lanzo, has bestowed evidence of his cosmic hip hop beatology to the cold busted label in the form of a new album, omnipotent. previously recording for blvnt records and the natural selection label, lanzo specializes in a style of experimental hip hop that draws from boom-bap, soulful downtempo, and atmospheres that lean toward the celestial. lanzo and his trusty mpc 1000 have been actively producing since 2008 and omnipotent confrms his upward trajectory, presenting ffteen tasty sonic morsels that groove in a confdent but abstract fashion. highlights include “comfort zone” which envelopes a swinging rhythm in dreamy strings, distant voices, and rolling bass, and the odd but appealing “gutter balls”, featuring some deliciously drunken synths. there’s also the melancholy quiet storm of “colours”, “against the wall” and its heavily processed beat magic, and the loping sci-f jazz of “between friends”. omnipotent is a heady listen, displaying textures and swirls that accentuate the sturdiness of its drum beats. lanzo has provided a distinctive soundtrack that’s ready-made for day blazing or night groovin’.

after moving from london to berlin cromby is back on tenderpark with his second ep for the vinyl label. the young man recreates our love for deep house with two sample-based tracks which showcase his ever advancing skills with the old school akai sampler mpc 2000 xl as well as his cool understanding of mixing haunting melodies with gripping groove patterns. the remix on the flip side comes from hip-hop super producer gone house lover hodini who has collaborated with the talented bass player chez kerim for this funky workout. the cover image shot by achim valbracht is the start of a new artwork series developed by tenderpark art director till sperrle which revolves around critique of investor-driven architechture that has been dominating berlin for several decades now. the speciously precious and glittering image displays a normalised and globally standardised kind of beauty but at the same time reveals a strong sense of loneliness. as always both the mastering and as well as the lacquer cut of this record have been carefully executed by vinyl sound mastermind helmut erler at dubplates & mastering.

vinyl only – after four first releases by myself, i invited three of my favorite producers and friends to take part in the first various artist ep of the label called retro future. a1 is provided by stevn.aint.leavn from the beste modus and certain circles camps. i ve been following stefan closely since the release of his big track -precious- and he is now making waves everywhere. for this record he provides -motion- a smashing house track that enlightened every dance floor i dropped it on. then comes alix alvarez, a real underground hero of the new york scene. he s been releasing tunes since more than 15 years, collaborating with mr v and franck roger. alix delivers the tune -no chaser-, a stripped back, deep and driving number that he is known for. the kind of track that made his reputation. on the other side of the record you ll find paolo rocco. he is the man of the moment, fresh from great releases on taverna tracks, rutilance or courtesy of balance to name a few. here we have -7284-, it has been a true favorite of mine over the last months. finally i round up the ep with -belle maison- a new jam i recorded a few months ago featuring an engaging french speech, mpc beats and fb-01 synths. welcome to retro future chapter one.

toby tobias joins delusions again for what will be his sixth(!) 12inch entitled the rain. the prolific londoner whose releases have graced such venerable labels as rekids, esp intistute and lets play house, is back with a vengeance, delivering two mighty fine originals plus a remix from nebraska. in true toby tobias style, the rain got made on an mpc, sliced and edited from a single live take through the desk then accidentally deleted so no further mixing, sequencing or editing could be carried out. but what is an a&r mans nightmare, turns out to be the record buying djs gain, as the improvised, dubby vibe and raw as mixdown give the track an authentic feel and energy which could only come from the madness in tobys method. fresh from his brilliant releases on mister saturday night and razor n tape, we have our man nebraska do his thing on the remix of the rain. dropping down the bpms a bit from tobys more frenetic original, nebraska adds a healthy dose of moogy lead lines to the lo-slung house groove, perfect for warming up the dancefloor.

since his untimely death at the all too young age of 32 the world has grown to appreciate the work of j dilla even more than when he was alive. there’s an ethereal quality to jay dee’s works, part boom bap but more mellow. mellow, but never soft. and dilla never stopped making beats, his mpc was by his side until the very end. it now resides in the smithsonian. due the prolific nature of his beat making, the world is blessed to have stacks of dilla material – some coming to light even this many years after his passing. in the world of hip hop, no one’s mother is more famous that ma dukes. go ahead, name check chuck d’s mom or chance the rapper’s mom or ti’s mother – without hitting google. and one of the reasons we all know ma dukes is her tireless effort to maintain dilla’s legacy. this release is yet another step in that direction. presented here, from the official ma dukes collection, are 15 works by jay dee from deep in the vaults, being released on vinyl for the first time.

german artist joel kehren is next up on roundabout sounds’ latest ep titled real love-. “real love” is a deep techno, bass line-driven beauty accompanied by a remix from an mpc-driven artist geffen. the flipside contains a lovely melodic remix from none other than orlando voorn.

after kicking things off with sean thomas’ (cop envy) the weigh, sydney’s outer time inner space return with a collaborative ep from jon watts, the kind-hearted, go-to sound engineer of the sydney club and experimental music scene and otis label owner, hugh burridge (aka hubert clarke jr). as resident djs for otis’ sweet echoes parties and guests for some of sydney’s more open-minded club promoters, jon & hugh have developed their own style of warm up set, largely unrestrained by genre. another view is just an extension of this open approach to club music. there’s an obvious ode to bukem’s good looking records, a lopsided mpc jam that could have been written by a drunk ron trent, a club roller with uk broken beat at it’s heart and a spaced out, dream-scape dub from melbourne mate, rings around saturn (dan white) to round out the ep. the common thread, they’re keeping it deep.

l one ist ein junger münchner hiphop beatbastler und drumcomputer-liebhaber. mit nur 24 jahren hat er bereits eine beachtliche diskographie als produzent vorzuweisen. darunter die projekte der rap-crews atp “c’est la vie oder was?” (2016 auf bumm clack) sowie weltuntergäng’s “dogmatikers elfen” (2014 auf tieftonkultur) entspringen seiner mpc bzw. seiner sp1200 und haben für aufsehen in der münchner rapszene gesorgt. als teil von akere oder manufaktur wagte er sich in vergangenen jahren auch in neue genres und lieferte neue ansätze zu triphop und dubstep ab.
auf der “farska lp verarbeitet l one seine impressionen seiner kroatienurlaube 2015 und 2016. jeden tag ist hier ein stück am strand mit nur einer mpc60 entstanden, welches entweder die mahlzeit (2015) oder das getränk (2016) des abendessens des vorabends im titel trägt.

jaxx madicine is a jazz-funk inspired house ish outfit from milan consisting of turbojazz (local talk, gamm records), parker madicine (heist, bastard jazz brooklyn, ct-hi records) and the talented jazz keyboardist veez_0 . with an organic and melodic sound collage you can hear influences from classic 70 s jazz-funk labels and artists like cti, mizell brothers, kudu and bob james but also the current sounds of kaidi tatham, byron the aquarius and harvey sutherland. on this their first ep you get three amazing tracks that all are made with a genuine love for analogue synthesizers, fender rhodes, clavinets and some soulful mpc programming...

primitive trust is the coming together of two experienced musical minds. in one corner is will saul of the influential aus music empire, and in the other is tom mangan, aka tee mango, the producer who started millionhands record and clothing label. the pair met many moons ago and reconnected recently at a festival in morocco. they bonded over music, lunch and shared family travails - and as they both now live in somerset decided a little local studio collaboration seemed all but essential. between them, these consumate country gentlemen have seen plenty a musical styles come and go, so decided their best route forward would be to make music to please themselves. to that end, they holed themselves up in tee mangos woodshed studio with the following ground rules: they would make music only with the gear they had (mpc 2000, ableton, roland 101, juno, fender rhodes, various fx pedals) they would trust their instincts and go with first feelings they would embrace the joy of randomness if in doubt they would ask what would carl do? with that, you have the simple but effective mo of primitive trust. these sessions have resulted in a series of three eps to be released over the course of four months. each ep will feature 2 or 3 original tracks and one fresh remix, with unique artwork and an illustration by all-around visual auteur geoff mcfetridge. using the building blocks of house, and classic techno primitive trust can do zoned out and romantic, as much as driving and heady, but with an ease that comes from experience, years in the making. while tipping their proverbial hats to the past they also look to the future with their sound, mixing samples, wigged out synthwork and propulsive rhythms to create something honest and heartfelt that will stand the test of time
